Our Story

Welcome to Daana

At Daana’s Curtin restaurant and in our Daana Catering Services, we are inspired by the recipes of our parents and elders, by popular street food and by dynamic regional dishes, which we share in the spirit of generosity.

Our family-run restaurant has grown from its modest origins as part of a ‘shipping container’ culinary initiative in 2015 to the beautiful space we now occupy at our restaurant in Curtin.

We were delighted and humbled to win awards from Restaurant & Catering Association of Australia as Canberra’s Best New Restaurant in 2017 and Best Indian Restaurant in 2018. The loyalty and support of our much-loved customers has helped us every step of the way, and we’re immensely grateful.

Daana isn’t just a multi-award-winning restaurant. We’re a family-owned business with heart. Whether it’s our fundraising activities through Karma Kitchen, our commitment to offering employment opportunities to people with special needs for which we have been recognised by being Finalists at the ACT Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards in 2017 and 2018 , or the fact that we donate all our tips to charities, Daana is all about food with heart.

We operate in a spirit of community and sustainability, guided by an abundance mindset based on generosity and giving. Our name is rooted in the word Sanskrit word ‘Dana’, meaning ‘giving’ and ‘generosity’, and this ethos guides our business fabric, and ‘Daana’ in Hindi also means the seed – signifying origin of life, and the food that nourishes us.

We can cater to most special dietary requirements while still offering you a quality dining experience, and with the trusted assurance that we do not use any nasty added colours, flavours or preservatives in our cooking.

Our meats are certified halal, and we do not serve beef or pork at the restaurant.

Sunita - our Chef d'inspiration

Born into a South Indian family with roots in Kerala, professional chef Sunita’s early passion for cooking developed in the kitchens of her parents and her grandmothers. Daana’s varied menu is inspired by many of Sunita’s family recipes, which she is very happy to share with her customers if they request them! 

Sanjay - our Chef de flavour

Originally from Delhi, Sanjay’s grandfather was a culinary expert, renowned for festival and wedding catering. Sanjay would watch him with awe, inspiring his own path to formal training as a chef and a career with India’s leading hotel group, Taj Hotels.

Together, Sunita and Sanjay have lived in cities across India, exploring different regional delicacies and cuisines, which they now present to Canberrans through Daana’s award-winning flavours cooked with immense love and passion.

Daana’s Regional Thali is a Saturday ritual for many of our guests. Why?

Every Saturday we take you on a culinary journey across India a different menu and cuisine each week that you ‘Eat-all-you-can’!

Each ‘thali’ allows you to indulge in gastronomic experience and explore the tastes of regional cuisines of India, all served in the true spirit of Indian hospitality on a traditional ‘thali’.

  For Karma Kitchen @ Daana is a regular event dedicated to supporting an organisation or cause in the community.

At Karma Kitchen there is no price tag for our special 3-course Chef’s Menu, so guests show their support through pay-it-forward and pay-as-they-wish towards the charity or cause, and Daana will donate a portion of the proceeds of these meals to the cause.
